Ranked: Every Pokémon Professor and Their Research

Pokémon Funko Pop

Every Pokémon game starts the same way. You wake up, some professor gives you a starter, and your adventure begins. But have you ever stopped to think about which professor is actually the best? Their research topics are all different — and some are way more interesting than others.

Here’s every main series professor ranked.

8. Professor Birch — Pokémon Habitats (Gen 3)

Birch studies where Pokémon live. That’s it. He’s also the only professor you have to rescue from a wild Pokémon attack at the start of the game, which is both funny and embarrassing. Nice guy, boring research.

7. Professor Rowan — Pokémon Evolution (Gen 4)

Rowan studies evolution, which is a huge topic. But the game doesn’t really explore it that deeply. He’s stern and serious which is a cool change from the usual friendly professor energy — but his research just doesn’t stand out.

6. Professor Juniper — Pokémon Origins (Gen 5)

Juniper studies where Pokémon originally came from. That’s genuinely interesting and connects to the big theme of Black and White — the relationship between humans and Pokémon. She’s also the first female professor in the main series which is worth mentioning.

5. Professor Kukui — Pokémon Moves (Gen 7)

Kukui studies Pokémon moves and actually lets Pokémon use moves on him directly to research them. That’s wild dedication. He’s also secretly the masked villain Royal Mask in Sun and Moon which makes him way more interesting than most professors.

4. Professor Sycamore — Pokémon Mega Evolution (Gen 6)

Sycamore researches Mega Evolution — one of the most exciting mechanics the series ever added. He’s charming, stylish, and actually battles you himself multiple times. Most professors just hand you things. Sycamore feels like a real character.

3. Professor Elm — Pokémon Breeding (Gen 2)

Elm studies Pokémon breeding and eggs, which opened up a whole new layer to the game. Without his research as a concept, competitive breeding wouldn’t exist. He’s a bit forgetful and awkward but his contribution to the series lore is massive.

2. Professor Magnolia — Dynamax (Gen 8)

Magnolia researches the Dynamax phenomenon — giant Pokémon that transform in battle. Her research is directly tied to the entire plot of Sword and Shield. She also gives you the Legendary Box and is one of the few professors who feels like she has real authority in her region. Her granddaughter Sonia does most of the fieldwork too, which is a nice detail.

1. Professor Oak — Pokémon as a Whole (Gen 1)

Oak wins and it’s not really a debate. He literally started everything. His research is the broadest — he wants to understand Pokémon completely, which is why he needs a trainer to fill the Pokédex for him.

Beyond the research, Oak is the most culturally important character in the franchise. His intro speech, his theme music, his grandson Gary — everything about him is iconic. He set the tone for every professor that came after.

No other professor comes close in terms of impact.

Oak started it all. But honestly every professor added something important to the world of Pokémon. Even Birch — at least his game gave us Rayquaza.
